If you picked up a deck in the late eighties/early nineties, chances are you're well acquainted with the Bones Brigade -- Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, (future MoWax recording artist) Tony Guerrero and Steve Caballero. They were utterly inescapable; the public face of Powell-Peralta, they were the greatest team ever assembled, and stars of the first skate video(s) that moved beyond highlights into actual storytelling. Their early videos were legendary, not only because they utilized actual cinematography, but also because the braintrust at Powell commissioned new music for the films. Bone Brigade Video Tunes compiles the music from their first three movies, and marks the first time that these songs have been released on any format. The bulk of the disc's twenty-five songs are culled from skate-epic The Search for Animal Chin, but it's early tracks like the irrefutably funky "Bones Brigade Shuffle" and "Calling all Cars", performed by the Rad Boys, that really shine. Samba sleaze Johnny Rad's lounge-punk serenades "McTwist and Shout" and "Skateboard Shuffle" are both delightfully daft -- the missing link between the Rat Pack and Operation Ivy.
