It's hard to avoid the conclusion that Nathan Amundson, the animating force behind Rivulets, has front-loaded
You've Got Your Own. "Waited For You", the leadoff to this five-song collection, is an eerily pretty piece of lazily strummed emotional release. It may fit the basic definition of slocore, but it has a pronounced (if gentle) melody line, a sense of forward motion and a pretty solid hook.
Unfortunately, "Waited For You"'s melodic strengths don't seem to carry over to the rest of the EP. "Shadow of a Ghost", for example, wafts mournfully over an endless arpeggio figure, and is underpinned by periodic, dull-sounding thuds (though it ends with an interesting upper-register piano figure). "Rain All Winter Long" comes directly from the two-chord-switchup page of Mark Kozelek's playbook, and "Let It Go" is centered around a powerful, somewhat dissonant, but again little-changing guitar/cymbal combination.
Not one of these songs is less than interesting, but there's certainly none of the variety that "Waited For You" promised. While that particular flowering of Amundson's muse may have to wait for next time, Rivulets' work here is certainly worthy of your attention.
