Soundclip: "22"

After opener "No Particular Destination", which lives up to its name with dark, droning aimlessness, things do not appear to bode well for this French duo. However, charly.roger comes alive after that inauspicious beginning, its dense circuitry of beats and glitches drives a series of electronic compositions. They aren't particularly fuzzy or sweet, but they sound pretty meaty.

From the twitchy, haunting mechanics of "Il Covo Club" to the lively digital tide of "Benjamine's Spasm", the songs on charly.roger run the gamut of noise and rhythm. Pulsating, club-style numbers like the interestingly titled "ass.music.etna.zo club" are complemented by spectral, uplifting cuts like "22". Propergol Y Colargol pull off some interesting soundscapes on "Aunties Annies", with a colorful parade of bleeps set against a chime of static, and the twinkling "Forum Stadpark". The songs are available for free download on the label's web site.
