This celebration of Ohio-based punk bands is like a time capsule from 1982. Punk has gone through an endless stream of mutations in the last twenty years, many of them for the worse, but if Ohio 2
is any indication, Ohio wasn't privy to the advances
. Like the legendary 1981 compilation Let Them Eat Jelly Beans
, which featured Bad Brains, The Circle Jerks and DOA, Ohio 2
is packed with two-minute blasts of simple punk energy. The breakneck speed of Lazy American Workers' "The Tatoo (sic) Guru" and the strangely enunciated vocals are reminiscent of In God We Trust, Inc.
-era Dead Kennedys, but without the commentary or vibrato. It's still fun.
Two female-fronted bands steal the show from this otherwise testosterone-fueled genre. Kill the Hippies do a fine job of conjuring up the nutty vocal stylings of Raoul in "Murder Babble", and whoever the badass who fronts Hypochondriacs is, she sure can scream her ass off.
While it's doubtful that any of the fifteen bands featured here will be the next Bad Brains (the world already has a Bad Brains), it's nice to hear that kids still know that punk music didn't always sound like Fall Out Boy.
