The first pressing of Lucky Me, Lucky Mud is a limited edition of 200, with handmade woodcut covers and the band's logo individually stamped on each disc. That's a lot of uniqueness for Love Is Chemicals' music to live up to, and on that front, it doesn't quite succeed. That's not to say that this is a weak disc; it's pleasant, fairly standard guitar-jangly indie rock, often reminiscent of fellow Northern Californians Pavement (most strikingly during "For Those Who Died"). Half the songs onthis six-track EP clock in at over five minutes apiece, meandering into mostly unnecessary instrumental interludes and refrains repeated to the breaking point. Despite the redundancy of those moments, when the band launches into the shout-along chorus of "Song of the Summer Youth Brigade" or when the restrained drums and bouncing bassline lock into a driving rhythm somewhere in the middle of "Bug Jar," Love Is Chemicals attains true summery pop joy.
