Lonely People Read Alot, the first offering from home-recorder Matthew Baringer, is a collection of DIY, broken-hearted bedroom rock. Yes, the vocals are weak. Yes, we've heard a lot of these sounds before. Yes, the quality of the recording is at times atrocious. But Baringer clearly has a grasp of what makes a tune catchy, and he's always careful not to beat a good idea into the ground. Songs soaked with apathy and misty-eyed visions of idealized romances seem to be the stuff upon which This Bank Holiday hope to make their name, using guitars, synthesizers, drums and other assorted instruments that must have been lying around the basement. Cheeky titles like "A Trampoline Might Win You Some Friends" and "A Trampoline Might Win Your Heart", however, illustrate the laid-back approach Baringer takes in offering these compositions, and hints at the sense of humor that pervades the disc. It's adolescent, it's childish and it's a pretty good start.
