Soundclip: "Midtown's "Easy Way Out""

Buy it at Insound!
While I understand the concept behind New.Old.Rare (four bands, three songs from each -- one old, one new, one rare), I can't say I understand the reason for putting it out. As far as I can tell, it's basically just four random punk bands for whose songs Fueled By Ramen was able to get a license. There's nothing really linking the bands, apart from the fact they all fall under the same broad musical genre, but even that link is tenuous at best. Midtown, for example, are pop-punk, while Blueline Medic sound oddly like Bush trying to sound edgy, Recover lean towards hardcore, and Silent*Corporation is essentially hardcore pop-punk. None of the songs are particularly memorable, either -- Midtown stand out by virtue of the fact they're the most easily accessible, but even their three songs are all basically throwaways (including "Become What You Hate", one of the least catchy things on last year's Living Well Is The Best Revenge). At best, disposable punk music can be mindless entertainment for three minutes. At its worst, or even at its most boringly average -- as is the case with New.Old.Rare -- it's uninspiring.
