Hark! Evidence that time travel machines truly exist is provided via this Sonic Swirl release of the revered Pagans. Compiling several live recordings made between 1978 and 1989, these 27 tracks, which range from sub-par to decent in recording quality, will acquaint you with the Pagans’ searing punk rock brusqueness. While the distorted recordings and overdriven microphones may not appeal to the everyday, unrefined Pagans fan, those of you "in the know" will relish these unpolished, candid peeks into the Pagans' touring history. Shining numbers include "Secret Agent Man," in which an awesome guitar riff starts the tune off right, and Pagans standards "What's This Shit Called Love" and "Give Up," both brandishing more sneering cynicism than Johnny Rotten's best mouth gesture. More importantly to the hardcore Pagans fan are the eight previously unreleased tracks, including stellar covers of the Velvet Underground's "There She Goes Again" and the Stones' "Heart of Stone." This mega-distorto mayhem does a fine job documenting the Pagans' influential sound throughout the years, while also giving peeks at the band members' onstage personas and 100% American punk rock attitudes.
