| Morgan Guberman's compositions for solo contra-bass are at once
intimate and frantic. The soft dynamics and delicate timbres draw you in,
inviting you to share in his obvious passion for his instrument. Once
you're there, spastic musical figures indicate an intriguing nervous
energy. Listening to Hamadryas Baboon is like being invited into
someone's subconscious and discovering an undulating mass of neurotic
quirks. And please don't misunderstand me here! I mean this in the best
possible way! Guberman's music is hypnotically riveting. Throughout my
listening to Hamadryas Baboon I could almost visualize the queer,
quiet but endlessly fascinating little sonic animals that infest its
compositional landscape. A warning is in order here: only those willing to
put forth a little effort will be rewarded by Hamadryas Baboon. If
you're willing to be seduced by it, however, you're in for a rich
experience.
