I've always found Bis shrill, cloying and in need of a few years'
worth of growing-up. However, these problems have largely been remedied
on Social Dancing; the band's massive surplus of youthful energy
has been channelled into a more sophisticated set of EuroTechno
PunkPop grooves, stuffed with breakbeats and squishy synthesizer lines
galore. It's an engrossing update of 80s pop -- more media-savvy,
more pop-culture-friendly, more techno-enhanced, but ultimately
just as light and airy. Imagine the love-child of the B-52s and
latter-era We've Got a Fuzzbox and We're Gonna Use It, with
techno and trip-hop enhancements nailed into its flesh. Or don't,
as that's a rather creepy image. Sorry. "Eurodisco", "Shopaholic"
and the sultry "Detour" (with guest vocals from unexpected Bis fan Lois Maffeo) should amply illustrate the concept without any nasty nails-in-flesh imagery.
While lyrical efforts at confronting "issues" are still pretty lightweight,
and while I still get the urge to slap and/or sedate pop princess
Manda Rin, I really enjoyed Social Dancing.
Perhaps I've finally found an incarnation of Bis that I can love. Or at least like.
