I first became familiar with Australian punkers Frenzal Rhomb through the
video for their 1996 single "Punch In the Face". It had a deep effect on
me, featuring not only punches in the face but conspicuous green pea
consumption -- such a winning combination that one wonders why it was not
thought of before. I made a mental note then and there to get more of
their stuff. With A Man's Not a Camel, I'm not at all displeased. For example, I chuckled heartily
when I heard the oh-so-clever pulmonary love song "I Miss My Lung," wherein
the guys mourn a lost lung with lines like "Another lonely sunrise takes
my breath away..." Or how about the unintelligible 10-second rant, "I
Know Why Dinosaurs Became Extinct"? It's fast and frenzied and makes no
sense, and after listening to it repeatedly I still don't know why dinosaurs became extinct! If you're a
punk purist I recommend classic in-yer-face tracks like "I'm The
Problem With Society" or "Do You Want To Fight Me?" Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know
such confrontationalism is clichéd by now, but who cares -- it really
rocks! And let's face it, punk is a relatively closed form anyway, so certain
conventions must be followed. Frenzal Rhomb have it down (or should I say
down under?) and man, is it great to listen to!
