It's so fucking wack that it's good! The soon-to-be ubiquitous Joe Thomas must've popped one too many before recording Just What the Doctor Ordered. Whatever the explanation, this R&B dance-funk party starts off with a drum machine, loopy guitar and Joe himself reinterpreting the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself". Sounds screwy, don’t it? Thomas continues his synth-madness with plenty of beats, thub-a-thub bass lines and music that probably ought to be on the local R&B station. "I'll Be There" has Luther Vandross written all over it, but the studio mechanics have it sounding more like a souped-up, rap-inflected, percussive triangle tinged jingle. Thomas is guilty of excessive studio production abuse, but his fabulous flair unearths that hidden, danceable element within you.. The element that shuns indie rock, abhors metal and blasts all things punk. An element that labels Mr. Thomas an admittedly cheesy, yet certified Bad Ass. Just What the Doctor Ordered is destined to be a cult classic -- you'll either get Joe Thomas' groove, or think Splendid E-zine has gone off the deep end. Look man, ya gotta loosen up, get relaxed and shit and unbutton that long sleeve shirt and let the soooooooooouuuuuullllll get in ya!
