| You may still think of Pansy Division as the poster boys of queer-core;
after all, for years that's what they've been. The blatantly gay punk
rockers from San Francisco have single-handedly defined a whole musical
sub-genre epitomized by a minimum of instruments and a maximum of queer
attitude. With 1997's More Lovin' From Our Oven, however, Pansy
Division started moving their music to a more complex level. The journey
started with More... continues with this year's Absurd Pop
Song Romance. Now with 2 guitars, PD's music is denser and more
layered -- it reminds me of recent work by The Lilys. Also, as the title
indicates, the Division makes a decided nod in the direction of pop with
the addition of brass and strings to their previously pure punk palette.
The very first sound on the disc, a dense, whirling swoon of strings, says
it all -- "These aren't the Pansies we grew up with!"
