television personalities
When Daniel Treacy gets off his antidepressants long enough to make a new TVPs album, it's quite an event. And if this really is, as rumored, the final Television Personalities album (again), it's nice to hear things ending on a more upbeat note than the rather glum I Was A Mod Before You Was A Mod. This time around, the watchword is "covers" -- Dan and co. take on some of Dan's favorite songs, and redo some TVPs numbers to boot. While the echoey "Love Changes Everything" suggests that the depression days remain, "TV on in Bed" returns to the cheery, childlike style of old -- simple guitars, plaintive vocals and a plinky-plonky reverb thing going on in the background. Then there's a cover of Modern Lovers' brilliant "Pablo Picasso" -- grimly determined and full of piano-fueled angst. Psychic TV's Brian Jones deification anthem "Godstar" gets a wondrously punky take (from a WNYU radio session) that's reminiscent of the TVPs' early days, and the title track -- as well as "Jennifer, Julie and Josaphine" and the other originals reworked here -- establish once again that this is a band that will someday sit at the right hand of God, indie-pop-wise. So until the next final Television Personalities album comes along, make a home in your heart for Don't Cry Baby.... It'll make you a better person. Really.
