| If you have a friend who's into Brazilian music I dare you to present
him with a copy of Carbona's Go Carbona! this holiday season.
Before he pops it in the old CD player though, you'd better warn him not to
expect some sissy Bossa Nova record because punky Carbona is about as far
from Jobim as roller derby is from figure skating! If it weren't for the
fact that the CD insert blatantly gives away the band's origins, I probably
would have been unable to distinguish the music on Go Carbona! from
that of U.S. punk outfits like Brent's T.V. or Sweet Baby. Lyrically
treating topics from foot fetishes to lunatics to toad-like best friends,
Carbona proves that you don't have to be a native English speaker to write
a good punk song. Records like this one make it clear that rock 'n' roll rebellion
is a global thing. File Go Carbona! under "world music flipping you
the bird"!
