Jonathan Richman
Former Modern Lovers head honcho Mr. Richman returns with his zillionth solo album. Wholeheartedly the definition of a cult figure, Richman once again delivers his amazing songwriting and brilliant lyrics on his latest release, I'm So Confused. Wielding his guitar wantonly, Richman's exuberant confidence and undeniable honesty are his two most potent and efficacious weapons, as they are what produces the magical connection between him and his fans. Richman's tunes evoke the emotions that produce the world's heartbreaks and heal those same viciously wounded souls. These contradictory phrasings are pleasantly blended together in an innocent but strikingly candid sense -- the sense that makes you feel as if Richman truly understands your feelings. And he does, he’s been just as much of a victim! The upbeat and poignant "Love Me Like I Love" bounces shamelessly while "Nineteen in Naples" tells the story of a young teen, gushing about his memories, fears and insecurities. Also included is the poignant "True Love Is Not Nice" from the Something About Mary soundtrack. Ric Ocasek's production is slick, yet it still places Richman in your personal space as he sings his ballads and weaves his tales of love-lost and love-not. Cleverly crafted and exhaustively executed, I'm So Confused scratches another notch onto Richman's long list of fine releases.
