After depleting my remaining stash of DayQuil, Actifed and NyQuil, I've
discovered that the music of Blind Man's Sun glows brightly with its
nimble combinations of jazz, hippy-psychedelia and piano-rock. While we at Splendid E-Zine certainly don't condone antihistamine abuse, nor
support the makers of such fine products (Vicks -- Call us, we'll
talk endorsements), my post-Quil experience reveals that Blind Man's Sun still has the skill and musical repertoire to deliver the goods without a drug-induced state of mind (Kids -- we don't sell either, so quit emailing!), though it certainly added another element! This hefty double disc set is impressive enough in its sheer magnitude, as hints of Sun Ra emerge on tracks like "The Battle" and "So I'm Singin'," delivering a funky, free-jazz space-enticing conglomeration. Likewise, a more Spacemen 3-ish, trance-inducing quality rears its head on "Sputnik," competently displaying the multi-talented and multifaceted musical abilities of this sextet's members. Could it be an album without genre limitations? It’s possible, as Of the Spheres quickly attracts your attention yet never ceases to goad you on to the next track, as you can only wonder where the CD laser will lead your gray matter next. Call me out of my mind, but here's an excellent accompaniment for late-night brainwave zoning.
