| From out of nowhere, Fonda has soared to the top of my "Bands I'd Like
to See Live Sometime Soon" list. Purveyors of semipsychedelic pop by
way of Stereolab and Lush, the group offer five tracks of gloriously
jangly, farfisa-enhanced girly-vocal-harmonies. Dreamily melodic guitars
are prodded along by droning organ chords, choruses build to a fever pitch
of squalling feedback and jackhammer drums, and Emily Cook's textbook
perfect voice keeps things floating along breezily. But this isn't another
boringly twee cookie cutter dreampop venture. When Cook and David Klotz
join voices on "Theme from 'The Operatives'", the result is a swirling,
hallucinatory assault that rocks harder and more urgently than any
introspective shoegazer group could possibly manage. The mid-tempo
thrumming of "Be a Volunteer" is equally powerful, delivering a solid and
unpredictable melody under lyrics stuffed with trite phrases like "There's no
'I' in team." Five tracks isn't nearly enough. Are you listening, Fonda? We
need a full-length, lickety-split. And then a tour. Come on. Snap to it!
