Robert Forster
Warm Nights
Beggars Banquet (CD)
Call him an enigma, a cult figure, or just another misunderstood
singer/songwriter, Robert Forster has led the life of a solo artist ever since the demise of the Go-Betweens. Similar to Billy Bragg or Richard
Thompson, Forster is destined to put out album after album of
consistently attractive tunes, garner much applause from critics and
fans, yet never quite reach beyond an underground following. Melding
country/folk nuances with a pop/rock backbone, Warm Nights brims with
melancholy. As cheerless as many of these songs tend to be, you can't
help but be uplifted by Forster's gift for both verse and sound. At
times the writing is a bit off balance, but it's that same sense of
incompleteness that makes it honest. It has been almost two decades
since Forster started off with the Go-Betweens, and Warm Nights shows
that his adept delivery and charm are still in full force. --es
