In The Nursery
Deco
ITN Corporation (CD)

30 second sound clip
The ITN web site notes that "(Deco) features a collection of 11 new works which pay homage to the aesthetic styles and influences of the 1920's Art Deco Movement." I'm embarassed to admit that I wouldn't have known that had I not visited the site, but ironically, ITN may be the perfect soundtrack for those who've just been reminded of the narrow scope of their world view. Their music is like nothing else on earth -- a riveting combination of lush, orchestral synthesis and unnerving-yet-undefined spirituality; imagine an early, super-evolved cousin to modern ambient music. Musical trademarks remain -- martial snare drumming ("Deco"), the spoken/sung vocals of Dolores Marguerite C. and the impossibly grand, filmic mix of strings, horns and wind instruments (including "real" flute and oboe) that echoes of vast, ornate, spaces and endless loneliness. To this riveting concoction, add the suggestion of trip hop's influence ("Woman", "Mandra") and you've got a disc that's as timeless as it is beautiful. --gz
