Neglected Sheep
Geno Died
Livestock (CD)
These past few years have seen this band of Charlotte-ites doing a heck of a lot of regional touring. This has
resulted in a healthy public following and respectable college radio
airplay, and has culminated in the release of the band's first full-length
album, "Geno's Dead". The influence of erstwhile southern rockers,
particularly R.E.M., is strongly evident on "Geno's Dead". Indeed,
Neglected Sheep's folksy, southern pop efforts could too easily be
negated by a virtual glut of post-R.E.M. southern roots bands, were it not for a well-developed work ethic and a higher-than-average musical
intelligence. Only time will tell whether this is enough assure the group's long-term survival. NG's not-so-secret weapon is their lead vocalist,
Kevin Harrison, whose vocals blend the style and nuance of The Psychedelic
Furs' Richard Butler with the visceral power typical of Eddie Vedder. If any single sonic element distinguishes NG from their sub-Mason-Dixon
counterparts, it is Harrison's compelling voice. --NW
