These days, struggling to break away from the hordes of synth-heavy bands has become increasingly difficult. Since electronic music has been mildly embraced by many an alterna-radio station, and even an occasional automobile ad, it's just as difficult for listeners to lend a willing and open ear to the next keyboard note. Somewhere in between groove-laden electronica and intriguing, neo-space-lounge ambience is The Anubian Lights' Naz Bar. Tracking a course that goes far beyond the typical orbit, The Lights have created one of the most intoxicating and invigorating electronic releases in recent memory.
Supposedly known for their wild and eccentric record collection, Tommy Grenas and Len Del Rio prove that they've not only done their homework but have brown nosed for plenty of extra credit, too; their resourcefulness and inventiveness shine here. Applying the necessary components for a successful dance floor hit -- steady, pulsating bass lines and upbeat tempos -- our smart duo applies Esquivel-laced bachelor pad theatrics to their mixes with unheralded precision. "Dreamstate in the Mainframe" has a William Gibson quality to it, as your mind quietly melds with the music, dropping you into a mechanized world of synthetic delight. The brassy, gurgling bass massages your senses while robotic vocals pick your brain apart like a master surgeon keenly plying his trade. "The 3-State Formula" steeps a repetitive and extremely catchy sample in a thick mix of trip-hop beats and synthy laser zaps. Ultimately, each of the Lights' tracks begins with an electronic base, but emanates a distinctly human sound, dragging listeners wary of electronica and lounge together in perfect harmony.
Unlike previous Anubian Lights releases, in which people assumed that Nik Turner's presence meant that the Lights were a Turner side-project, Naz Bar is all about the Grenas/Del Rio connection, proving that these two are the ultimate masterminds behind the Lights’ music. With a constant set of luxurious and swanky sounds drifting from each track, there's a practically endless supply of aural entertainment here. Let your parents be the ones with reservations about computerized music and sample-heavy sound bytes; Naz Bar will stun any listener with its remarkable creativity, endless supply of complex beats and delicious bachelor-pad-centric moods. After a few hours of listening to the latest Lights release, you'll agree with me that another era of electronic history has indeed been witnessed.
