Like entirely too many CDs these days, Peloton has been
available in the UK for more than a year. Don't let Beggars Banquet's
reticence put you off, though -- Peloton is worth the wait. It's
a gently beautiful guitar pop concoction, adorned with strings, flutes, piano
and Emma Pollock's lighter than air vocals. At the center, of course, are the
guitars, their melodies alternately piercing and lulling, squalling and
sedate, but invariably full of rich sonic textures. The Delgados' ear
for pastoral beauty isn't particularly surprising, however -- as the
owners of Chemikal Underground records (home of Arab Strap, Magoo
and of course Mogwai), they've set a pretty high standard for their
own music. That standard is readily met by songs like the gently
insistent "Don't Stop", the densely downbeat "Pull the Wires from
the Wall" and the lead-off single "Everything goes around the water",
each of which radiates sheer pop gorgeousness as if it was readily
available for a few pennies at the corner shop. Peloton is a perfect album
to buy as the weather gets warm and you grow eager for summer,
but beware -- these melodies will entice you into hours of blissful,
grass-blade-counting inaction. |
