A three-artist compilation from Indiana’s Keyhole records, this disk
includes the brooding handiwork of Spain's Migala, Greg Weeks'
inspiring singer-songwriting and the twisted, lo-fi rock experiments of
Tinsel. Migala's "A Fistful" leads off the CD, with rich baritone
vocals reminiscent of Peter Murphy with a thick Spanish
accent. This Spanish sextet is amazingly good at echoing its American
indie-rock peers with simple yet catchy riffs and an enticing vocal
style. Fortunately, Migala isn't the only intriguing unknown artist
here, as Greg Weeks capably exhibits his lush guitar playing while
weaving colorful notes in between thoughtful, sobering lyrics. Weeks’
electrifying, personable style will certainly satiate the Television
Personalities void that lingers within your soul. While easily the most
enigmatic, Tinsel provides an eerie, effervescent style that begs for
your aural attention. This mysterious cartel has stylistic similarities
to the other two artists, as an acoustic guitar acts as the musical
guide, yet tracks like "Sink" and "Out of the Mirror" stand apart with
percussive weirdness and eccentric lyrics. It's a pleasant yet disturbing
end to this cohesive compilation of bands, all of whom could possibly be heard
on 4AD Records, but are coupled together on Songs From An Attic
to produce a unique release.
