Do you dig Daft Punk? Do you dance to Dimitri From Paris? For you, is Air alright? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions you may be the right sort of listener for 1999, the latest delightful confection from the Paris DJ scene. Think big beat with a Latin twist or French hip hop not associated with MC Solaar! The duo of Philippe Zdar and Boombass (formerly of La Funk Mob and Motorbass) drop phat, funky garage grooves with disco attitude which, though less aggressive than Daft Punk's full frontal onslaught, are still decidedly in the same vein (in fact you can often catch these two acts performing together). If you were a fly on the wall watching me while I listened to this CD you'd see me dance the most to track 4, "La mouche" -- the shuffling snare is scrumptuous and the perfect foil to the throbbing 808. I'm also drawn to the groovy piano and organ sounds as well as the buzzy, almost voice-like melody line. An honorable mention goes to the hip-hoppy "Planetz 8", which somehow maganges to sound contemporary even though its beat could have come from Run DMC's Raising Hell. Also check out the twisted groove of "Mister Eveready", the '70s je ne sais quoi of "Club Soixante-Quinze" and the 'one-ness' of "Supa Crush" (which would make even James Brown proud). It's nice to see some good music coming out of Paris these days!
