we only love you

Icy. Silky. Lustrous. Luxuriant. Any of those words would be an adequate attempt at describing the Halou sound. I could also say "delicious vocals float over a sea of harmonies, enmeshed in the unexpectedly elegant trappings of electronica", and not be entirely off the mark. Like many Bedazzled acts, Halou come off as hardy third-generation descendants of the Cocteau Twins et al; their music has evolved, retaining the ornate details and baroque elements of its ancestry but veering away from brittle melodies, while adding a willingness to cross-pollenate genres and styles. We hear the layered vocals and orchestral elements of top-of-the-line trip-hop on "I'll Carry You", skittery drum-and-bass percussion on "It Was Safer When You Were Near" and crunchy, overmodulated breakbeats on "La Mer", all energized by achingly sophisticated female vocals and enveloping swells of keyboard heaven. Yes, you've probably heard this combination of elements before -- it's scarcely an empty genre -- but the sheer three-dimensionality of Halou's music makes We Only Love You stand out as a distinct success.
