Of Montreal
Out of Athens, Georgia, a bold cry arises: "Fans of warped music, UNITE!" Flying this flag for end-of-the-millenium eccentricity is Of Montreal. Not so much a group as a collective of musicians who are anything but run of the mill, Of Montreal is everything that’s missing in music these days. Romping through everything from piano-rock to pop-smart songwriting (see NW's Of Montreal review) to crazy bachelor pad noise-effect laden tunes, Of Montreal can be simply labeled as, well, shockingly unclassifiable! "The March of the Gay Parade" is ridiculously hilarious in that a strange kazoo-inspired ditty trades off with a wonderful voice that chimes in with comments like "Oh, how nice!" and "Yes!", which are so absurdly expressed that they can only be fully appreciated when you hear them for yourself! But Of Montreal is not merely a one-track musical concept riding on the rails of absurdity; tunes like "Fun Loving Nun," "The Miniature Philosopher" and "Tulip Baroo" are so brilliantly composed that repeated listens only enhance their good natured, off-kilter magnificence. At last, a lively and energetic CD that not only amuses, but does a superb job of providing mesmerizing entertainment as well. Guaranteed to keep your CD player company for some time, The Gay Parade is a must; acquire immediately or face the consequences.
