Trashier than Garbage, Sherry Fraser, the singer/songwriter/bassist behind
Two Ton Boa's freakshow grunge act, sports a bleach job with lots of
roots, a ton of black eyeliner and a sultry pout. She has a lighthearted
and playful lyrical gift:
My heart is floating in a seasick bag of meat
My will is broken and my tongue has lost her feet
My throat unravels spilling out this hopeless cancer
It feels so nice to be a dopesick topless dancer
(from "Two Ton Boa")
On top of that she has a killer voice -- scary, sweet and mysterious, all
at the same time!
Check out "Bleeding Heart" for some terrific vocals. "Two Ton Boa" is a
dark, ragged dirge. "Comin' Up from Behind" was covered by Marcy
Playground for the movie "Cruel Intentions." Even though the movie sucked,
the song's still a winner, a swinging frolic out behind the circus
tent. Another nice vocal performance highlights "Puppet Charm." The EP
ends on a lighter note (musically anyway) with the almost-dancy "Have
Mercy."
Despite constant junkie references and generally depressing lyrics, this
is actually a pretty fun CD. The music is interesting and well played, and
Fraser's vocals consistently hold things together and move the songs along
when they're in danger of getting bogged down in "See how dark and
depressing I am" land. I have a feeling Two Ton Boa could put on a pretty
great live show. Keep your ears open.
