The Lonesome Organist

First off, let's set the record straight. This isn't the debut record from your local 71-year old, recently-widowed Church organist. Rather, imagine Carl Stalling and John Zorn writing the soundtrack to a Spaghetti Western, with a single musician playing all of the instruments simultaneously. Almost like the indie-rock one-man-band performer, The Lonesome Organist eagerly applies the principles of the aforementioned musical geniuses and splashes on his own twisted contortions to produce an album of varied styles, tempos and moods. Cavalcade is almost overwhelming in its entirety; the grab-bag of genres represented here range from clanky circus-inspired tunes to ambient states of mind to strange steel-drum based Caribbean rhythms. Redirecting the musical traffic on "Balloon Race Phenomenon," our Organist fuses the sounds of Jimmy Smith's jazzy organ tones with the most conniving of double-agent spy thriller soundtrack moods -- after Cavalcade gets a few spins in the disc player, Mr. Lonesome will have you watching your back, doubling back and racing for cover unexpectedly. One man bands may be a novelty to some, but the examples of musical talent and skill displayed here are impressive enough to demand a bit of your listening time.
