If you buy only one CD that combines the talents of a performance artist-slash-drag queen, a Japanese noisemonger and one of the world's most famous sample-jockeys, make sure it's PantyChrist. If you buy more than one, we'd like to know where the hell you're shopping. Wisely answering the "Will this CD offend my loved ones?" question at the reading-the-title stage, PantyChrist proceeds to be agressively, defiantly and unrepentantly Odd with a capital "O". Credited simply as "voice", bi-coastal drag diva Justin Bond hollers, mutters, screams and schemes over Bob Ostertag's bed of loosely-knit found sounds and Otomo Yoshihide's ear-abrading noise; it's probably better to call these "character sketches" or "vocal-instrumental sculptures" than to attempt to stretch the definition of "songs" to fit. "When I Come Back" approaches hip-hop briefly, though solely by virtue of its sampled beat, but the terrifying rant that accompanies it could, at sufficient volume, frighten even Karen Finley into dropping her candied yams and taking shelter under the bed. "Just Whistle", on other hand, is a warped take on "Whistle While You Work" that'll have you recounting the events of your day in an attempt to figure out when you could've accidentally dropped some blotter. Yes, children, this is Difficult Listening. So why recommend it? Well, it's odd, but PantyChrist endears itself more with each listen; there's something admirable in its energetic peculiarity, and an intangible work ethic in its lovingly hand-warped sound. If I ever found myself having dinner with the Cenobites from the Hellraiser films (you know, like the pin-head guy), I'd expect to find this CD in their collection -- but I'd be able to say "Oh, hey, cool, you've got PantyChrist..." and bring us all closer together.
