10¢

A complex record that mysteriously rides the line somewhere between indie rock anonymity and mainstream rock frou-frou, Buggin' Out will surely be the album you hate to love. Try all you like to shrug off these toyish, wholesomely endearing tracks, but in the end 10¢ will have you panting pathetically, drenched in sweat, hunched over on the floor in a post-funked-up haze. The opening track, "Blow It Up Y'all" hooks you like a helpless striped-mouth bass, leaving you to dangle in an air of either dumbfounded awe or ahh! Speaking of bass, Tina Link's funky bass lines are so catchy the band doesn't even need its well stocked arsenal of hooks -- hip-hop drum beats, breathy vocals, funky guitar licks and faux horn sections -- to reel you in. Other standouts include the bouncy "Red Rubber Ball" and the mind-numbing album-closer "Bubble Bath," which takes songwriting nonsense to the edge while retaining the integrity of a finely sculpted pop gem. With production credited to the notorious Dust Brothers, expect something that not only sounds smoothly polished but offers an abundance of fun, time-tested material that'll medically inject its groove into your soul, smoothly extracting any anger in the process.
