Give a rock critic a guitar and one of two things will happen: (a) Rock critic will shudder and state that "there's no good rock music left to be made", or (b) Rock critic will triumphantly apply his discerning music experience into a viable art form. Former New Jersey Beat contributor Bill Lutz and fellow Provan cohorts (all of whom also boast healthy rock credentials) stick steadfastly to plan (b), producing a controlled pop record that shows mature restraint in the songwriting and slick, succulent vocals. The opening track, "Superbuick," has a familiar ring to it, yet its muted guitar chords craftily carve a distinct niche into the modern-day indie rock circuit. The reverberating guitar notes and space-rock effects ring cleanly on "Dan Emery Mystery Band" as they execute a slower-paced number that modestly refines emo-pop and proves to be a strong anchor for this six song EP. Take it from someone who tends to apply point (a) to his lifestyle too often -- Provan adds all of the necessary ingredients into Act Like You've... to create a tasty pop rock EP full of chunky guitar, gritty rhythms and charming vocal melodies.
