hard to kill

Ahh, this is the sort of Nettwerk release I remember from my "youth" -- ornately brittle electronic melodies teamed with persistent percussion, ethereal lyrics and otherworldly female vocals. If you remember the early days of Single Gun Theory or enjoyed Chris and Cosey's "Nettwerk Era", Weed should fit comfortably into your worldview. You'll welcome the slow-paced, heavy duty, not-quite-Industrial/not-exactly-electronic attack of the title track, and perhaps you'll swoon to the unnerving synthesized-acoustic rhythm and timely breakbeats of "Hit and Miss". Without a doubt, the ultra-sophisticated effervescence of "If Only U Could See" will bounce you along on bubbling keyboards, silken tidal textures and Cristina Handrabur's breathily mesmeric vocals; it's definitely one of the most striking songs I've heard this year (though the bonus "Fade Vox Remix/Edit" dumps all of the best and most distinctive elements in favor of a throbbing club beat). Cristina makes an arresting and distinctive frontwoman, while husband Dan approaches the Guy Who Stands In The Back And Twiddles Lots Of Knobs role with aplomb; together, as horribly cliche as it might sound, they really do make beautiful music. Unless you were born too late to appreciate ethereal club-pop at its best, you're bound to appreciate Weed's timeless stylishness.
