The Rough Guide to the Music of Portugal
Known for their extensive catalog of Rough Guides, the World Music Network tackles the heart and soul of Portuguese music with this release. Portugal's claim to musical fame, the sad, melancholy and syncopated fado, is well represented on this CD. The great fadista, Amalia Rodrigues anchors the disc; her talents are showcased on "Ai, Mouraria," including some distinguished guitarra leads which also embellish Rodrigues' vocals. Likewise, fados from Lenita Gentil and Dulce Pontas explore the Italian operatic influence and the subtle yet readily prevalent Moorish influences that make the fados a true cross-cultural experience. However, there's much more here than fados! Several artists revive traditional musical styles, including Realejo, who incorporate the hurdy-gurdy into their peaceful and well-executed instrumental. While traditional styles are heartily expressed on this compilation, there is also a nod to the modern stars of Portugal, including the young Anabela, whose sexy and passionate voice mirrors some of the present Top 40 stars in America. The Rough Guide... is like taking a time machine through the various eras of Portuguese music, stopping to reflect on a variety of styles, influences and inventions which have enabled this country's musical scene to flourish through the decades of the 20th century.
