Ah, the piercing sounds of speedy snare drum hits and ear-stinging guitars. As with most metal releases, Blo.Torch may seem like unnecessary, noisy ear fodder to some -- but to the experienced aficionado, this fearsome Dutch fivesome executes speedy thrash metal tainted with an occasional Maiden-styled rocker and a general propensity for dispensing steady bursts of death metal. "Spanish Sun" erupts with raspy, scowling vocals and doubled guitar notes that'll please the most discriminating metal connoisseur. However, what keeps Blo.Torch writhing among the huddled metal masses is the variety in its vocal delivery. Alternating between barked death metal grunts and melodically sung lines, Blo.Torch refuses to corner itself with a one-sided death metal sound. The technically exquisite "The Inkblack Sky" intertwines fierce power chords and abrupt tempo changes, producing a gruesome gem of a song. The deceiving passivity of rolling drums introduces "King of Karnage," convincingly fooling those unprepared for the sheer power that blasts from the speakers a few moments later. True to its name, the band burns through this Pantera-inspired rocker with smart lyrics and a healthy splattering of reliable guitar dueling. Here's another tourist attraction to add to your itinerary when visiting The Hague -- but unless your folks retain a strong hatred for humanity and yearn for depravity, we suggest you leave 'em at the museum. |
