It's chancy enough to release a live album for mass fan consumption, but it's almost preposterous to release one when your name is scarcely a household word. New Jersey's longstanding -- but relatively unknown -- Bouncing Souls decide to take a shot at longevity with this live recording from the Continental in NYC. Benefiting from an above-average sound (you know how live recordings can go), the set list chooses some of the more appetizing tracks from the Souls' albums. "Say Anything" cruises at full throttle to start the CD off, followed closely behind with the suburban angst of "Kate is Great" and the meaty "Chunksong," written by Timmy from Token Entry. While "ECFU" (East Coast Fuck You) may have its own special place in this Texan's heart, what's fundamentally apparent is that the Bouncing Souls know how to put on a show. As an added bonus, the Souls also have some pretty swanky tunes that carefully balance between good ol' hardcore punk and melodious pop punk - a happy marriage of both mediums. Tacking on a studio track at the end of the CD, Tie One On (Live) is a solid introduction for the new fan and an enjoyable, quick rip through a live set for the discriminating one. I know I'll be at their next live show -- will you?
