Ipsdesip Ipsdesip isn't the real title of this disc. As might be obvious to anyone who (a) takes a few seconds to look at the CD cover, and (b) has more than passing familiarity with Jumble (that scrambled word game)®, the real title of the disc is Dis Pepsi (although they can't put it on the CD). This they proceed to do with alacrity, beginning with "The Smile You Can't Hide," in which snippets of Pepsi jingles are mixed with samples of cold, manipulative marketing talk. From here we journey to "Drink It Up", in which product names and marketing slogans are turned against themselves within the framework of a happy folk songs. "Why Is This Commercial" is another sound collage, this time of celebrities et al appearing in, and commenting on, commercials. "Happy Hero" is a rather scathing indictment of celebrity pitchfolk (perhaps Michael Jackson in particular). From there, the disc continues to dis advertising, consumerism and short-term-product-purchasing culture within the slightly dated rhetoric of the Cola Wars. Negativland does this sort of stuff -- specifically, the arrangement of sound bites to create an ironic, contrary picture -- better than anyone, which is why Ipsdesip is listenable even if you don't give a crap about your soft drink choices and how deeply they've become ingrained in popular culture. Enjoy Ipsdesip with the generic beverage of your choice.
