| Phat!...The bass lines, I mean. They're big and
bad and sick and dope. They'll have your frame thumping from your molars
to your big toes. Obviously this is a good thing -- I mean, what would a dub
album be without bass? Furthermore, let's face it folks,
dub is dub! If you've heard Lee "Scratch" Perry you've got the
picture. It isn't the form that counts as much as the execution. If it's
good dub the bass should cut right to your soul and with Devil Dub
Bay area dubmeisters Ben Wa succeed brilliantly. O.K. so the bass is
great, but let's not forget the tripped-out, plate-reverb-ridden slow beats
or the or the occasional sinister, growling vocal line. Or how about the
subtly cool science fiction overtones of the song titles and the little B
movie snippets heard between tracks? It's campy, it's twisted, it's dub!
I should mention also that Ben Wa have collaborated with several big name
artists (Bill Laswell for example) in creating dub hybrids. On
Devil Dub this is obvious in tracks like the hip-hop-infused
"Parastolic Dub" and the subtle swing of "Beelzebub Dub". Buy this album
and your neighbors across the street will soon be feeling it their bones,
guaranteed! |
