[cover art][review]
Hooverphonic I've been playing A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular almost continuously for the last few days. and the fact that I can't seem to keep it out of my CD deck must mean something. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for the seductive-sweet vocals of Liesje Sadonius. Or maybe it's the gut-tingling basslines -- the kind you seem to feel more than hear. Or it might be the trippy/funky drum rhythms . . . or the tasteful use of sampling . . . or the brooding, dare I say film-noirish atmosphere of the whole thing . . . Whatever it is, it all adds up to the best trip hop I've heard in a long time! In a world currently preoccupied with comparing the new Portishead album to the last, Hooverphonic has snuck in the back door and taken a well-deserved seat at the trip hop dinner table. Run, don't walk . . . etc.
