Sally Timms

Hopefully you've already experienced what happens when you mix a Mekon with booze; you get the fantastic-sounding, Jon Langford-led Waco Brothers. Joining her compadre in the country department, Mekon chanteuse Sally Timms teams with an all-star cast of musicians for an album full of lush lullabies and taut tearjerkers. Cowgirl Sally sounds as authentic as they come, with a bit of a drawl, a few tales of sorrow to tell and a voice that can comfort the most troubled of souls. And while Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments... certainly has a steadfast air of country to it, tunes like "The Sad Milkman" and "Cancion Para Mi Padre" make ample use of instruments like the Hawaiian guitar, mandolin and violin, producing an abundance of memorable melodies that raise the album over your average country-going-nowhere release. The tenderness of Timms' voice on "Rock Me to Sleep" is so precious that you dare not breathe too loudly for fear of disturbing the precarious balance of the song. Bloodshot has unveiled another stellar performer to the alt-country world -- one who delivers superb musical talent, with an inviting and invigorating sound that keeps the muddled world of hyper-speed guitars and screaming vocalists rightfully in check.
