| On Eres + 16, Pierre-Andre Arcand constructs sinister
polyphonies of sound. Layer upon layer of dark audio material combine to
produce dense climaxes in an aural collage. And mind you, this isn't your
typical high-production-value electro-acoustic music; indeed, thick
distortion and fuzzy samples result kind of rebel e-a sound (electro-punk maybe?). The highlight of the CD is the first track, which
samples a recorded diatribe (in French) asserting that the modern world has
relegated humans to the status of machines in a machine and that language
is nothing but meaningless text spitting out of insignificant contraptions.
The struggle of humanity versus technology is brilliantly demonstrated by
taking this anti-mechanical propaganda, spit out by what sounds like some
kind of evangelizing humanist, and cutting it up -- decontextualizing it
beyond comprehension. It is as if even in his most ardent attack against
modern society, Man has lost the ability to communicate anything at all.
For electro-acoustic music that isn't snobby and that can pack a punch,
check out Eres +16.
