How it Feels to Be Something On
Lots of people will be glad to see SDRE back -- their breakup was entirely too premature, especially for a band that so many people thought would be the Next Big Thing. The scope seems a bit grander this time out, as if the band is looking to paint a larger and more cohesive sonic picture. Indeed, tracks like "Roses in Water" -- which sports not only an Eastern tinge to its music, but a distantly Jethro Tullish delivery at odd moments -- betray a certain penchant for prog-rock concept album conceits. Mind you, that's back in vogue, these days. However much Jeremy Enigk's sometimes dubious falsetto might make you smile, How It Feels... is not a happy album; there's more introspection and malaise than joy, as the title track demonstrates, but that's fine -- it's what these guys seem to do best. Despite the occasional heavy-handed lyric, the album is a wondfully thoughtful, emotional trip, buoyed by subtlety and cryptic storytelling. If you're a band coming back from the dead, this is definitely the way to do it.
