the start of our affair

Don't worry -- this Cherry Orchard has nothing to do with Anton Chekhov. The Start of Our Affair is as light and airy as Chekhov's play is heavy and downbeat. The disc's opener sums it up nicely -- "That Summer Feeling" isn't just a song, but the mood induced by listening, which makes it a rather bittersweet musical choice for late September. What you'll find here is a gently retro pop sound -- airy, a bit French, with horns and strings aplenty, permeated by a timeless breeziness. Imagine the Legendary Jim Ruiz Group sans insouciance, and with a couple of mildly alcoholic drinks under their collective belt, or picture the Housemartins or Saint Etienne busking on a Riviera boardwalk. You might not be humming Cherry Orchard songs for the next six months, but their "sound" is memorable -- lightweight yet indelible, upbeat yet winsome, timeless yet prone to long term memory association. Jason Smith's vocals hit the perfect balance between skill and charm; he sounds a little bit like every wide-eyed, love-besotted boy you've ever met. Sara Onyett, meanwhile, adds a breathy, crush-inducing female counterpoint at every avenue. When these two sing, summer isn't limited to three fleeting months. You'd better enjoy it while you can! Grab the portable CD player, slip on the headphones, lie down on the grass and let The Start of Our Affair hold back the autumn for a few more days.
