Here's a quick lesson in self-preservation (Croce cum Splendid advice, kids): Don't tug on Superman's cape, don't spit into the wind, don't pull the mask off the ole Lone Ranger, and never, ever stand in the way of Sweden's metal monster, Entombed. A live recording from their 1992 "Gods of Grind" tour, Monkey Puss offers such gems as the ferocious "Left Hand Path" and the formidable thrash-fest "Crawl." Entombed's blitzkrieg onslaught of metal mayhem is relentless throughout these ten tracks, testing the aural limits of even the most obsessed fan. Equally enjoyable is the heavily accented, in-between songs, Swede-English stage banter, which enhances the "live" listening experience. Like all live recordings, the sound quality fluctuates -- the meaty, dual guitar sound is not as crisp as the band's studio albums and the vocal level varies from track to track. However, Earache has done a good job preserving and reproducing Entombed's brutal live sound on disc. And while, to the uninformed, Entombed may sound like just another grindcore/death metal band, remember the age of this recording; only then do you realize that this Swedish terror was at the forefront of one of the 90’s most extreme genres.
