Energy and attitude -- what more can you ask from a breakout jungle act? How about a sense of humor and some cheeky self-awareness? Ph10 have that in spades, and they're determined to bring their brand of jungle music to the people.
Their first single is a flurry of activity surrounding the requisite breaks, with a deft nod to pop culture sound bites and a furiously upbeat pace. Despite the obvious production flourishes that fine-tune it for public consumption, it's actually not as interesting as the b-side, "Helmut Theme", which cribs numerous "helmet" references (including chunks of dialogue from Spaceballs) and wraps them around some thunderous beats. The timing on "Helmut Theme" is even sharper than on "Needless", though admittedly, that may be due to the clear-cut comedy route ph10 have taken here. The instrumental version of "Needless to Say" also caught my ear more often than the title version featuring Pete Miser, in which case ph10's upcoming album should be even better than their first single. While no one has claimed responsibility for unleashing jungle on the mainstream audiences just yet, based on this early glimpse at their forthcoming disc, ph10 have a better chance than most.
