I was a little shocked to hear that this quintet hails from San Francisco. My first guess would've been some tiny Eastern European backwater, or possibly Mars. Few would argue that this five track EP (a follow up to the full length Que Son Los Troll y en Que Nos Ayudan) contains some truly warped stuff; it conveys a taste for spacy, Dionysian psychedelic extravaganzas, arrangements worthy of both Ennio Morricone and Question Mark and The Mysterians, and lyrics that sound like they're being sung in Spanish, Danish, French and English, all at once. Whereas most outfits would singularly flavor a garage rocker like "Western" with farfisa organ, Troll also adds dollops of theremin to the mix (courtesy of leader Lotte Svennigsen). "Mexicana" could very well be Nico singing with The Doors (in Esperanto), "I Walk On Water" rethinks ABBA as a lounge act both Serge Gainsbourg and Chris Issak could appreciate, and "Li'l Lisa Slurry" unfolds at an epic, ominous, nearly thrilling pace, although it doesn't seem to have anything to do with The Simpsons episode referenced by its title. At a brisk nineteen minutes, Pathless Land only leaves you wanting more of Troll's kooky, trippy goodness. I even enjoyed it fully sober.
