The British Invasion bands of the 1960s left an indelible mark on American pop music, impressing their jangle and beats upon countless emerging musicians and adoring fans. They also left a mark -- perhaps a stain -- on pop culture, spawning a whole class of Vespa-riding, shaggy-haired, boot-wearing wankers. The Shivers, clinging desperately to their one-quarter British nationality for some shred of credibility, pull on their tight pants, button their blazers and hop out of Indiana with an entirely unmemorable collection of wannabe mod rock.
While the band claims that the disc is riddled with "infectious hooks", Move All You Wanna's only obvious infection is some variant of anemia. The inane opener "Ice Cream Van" (FYI, it's for "when you want a cool down / When you wanna get some") sets the uptempo yet bland tone -- which the Shivers proceed to repeat across nine indistinguishable tracks. For all the influence still wielded by bands like the Kinks and the Who decades after their glory days, I think The Shivers missed the memo. They do, however, have a song ("Tiramisu") about "vintage leather shoes".
"If you keep dancing with me / I'll keep on keeping on," The Shivers promise in the title track. But despite the alluring scene staged on the album cover, there's not much here to make you move all you wanna, or even a little. Maybe a shudder or two, if anything.
