Be Your Own Pet are
so badass and
so young that it wouldn't be a surprise if a group of aging rockers paid decent money to have them silenced, as any band that's this good at this age makes everyone else in the scene look bad. These kids are still in high school, if you can remember what that's like, but somehow they've churned out a handful of two minute lo-fi punk blasts so convincing in their attitude and style that you won't be sure whether to shout in bliss or call DCFS.
Front and center in this glorious mess is vocalist Jemina Abegg, a young lady whose voice contains all the fury and confidence you never had during puberty (and still don't). Abegg sings in a gruff, melodic purr that owes as much to The Muffs' Kim Shattuck as it does to The Fastbacks' Kim Warnick. When she growls "You've got me on a leash / a damn damn leash / and it's hard enough to be my damn self" on "Damn Damn Leash", the fact that Pearl and her band weren't alive during The Fastbacks' heyday doesn't appear to be a problem; Be Your Own Pet prove that aggression, angst, style and rock are things you're born with, not things you learn.
