If you sport a quiff, have a colorful set of tattoos, wear a leather-studded jacket and worship The Meteors, you've probably already had plenty of exposure to Psychobilly. For the rest of us, this cross between punk, '50s-era rockabilly and horror flicks is fringe territory -- a large subculture in which locals band and bond during "Psychobilly Weekends" for a mess o' musical and cultural offerings.
Think of this 29-track compilation as your own Psychobilly Weekend, but without the need to ever leave the house. With plenty of standup bass, harrowing growls and tongue-in-cheek references to graveyards and coffins, Kicked Outta Purgatory... Psychobilly presents a variety of Psychobilly acts thrashing, blasting and haunting their respective musical wares.
The disc is a bit unsteady at first -- the first few bands don't have a whole lot to offer. Demented Are Go!'s "I Wanna See You Bleed" suffers from sub-par production and relies too heavily on punk to make much of an impression. Even Psychobilly-stalwarts Nekromantix aren't at their best here; their uninspired "Nekronauts" should have been buried. However, there's still a lot to choose from, and once you reach the middle of the compilation, everything sounds a whole lot better. Concombre Zombi's "Buried Alive" and Bad Reputation's "Kingdom of the Night" sound stellar and have a certain rhythmic catchiness that should get your blood flowing. The Gutter Demons' punchy bass lines in "''Til the End" sting like an embalming needle piercing your clammy skin, and the ghoulish vocals on Knock 'Em Stiff's "Proctor Valley Road" will creep out even the most morbid of coroners. Toss in a few well-known Psycho-dealers, like Deadbolt, Horrorpops and the Phantom Rockers, and you can't help but get your money's worth.
This musical charnel house will either convince you to delve further into Psychobilly culture or make you clasp your crucifix and ask for the Almighty's protection. Good luck with that.
