Cheese on Bread are a pair of impossibly cute young adults -- one guy and one gal, singing impossible cute folk songs.
Maybe Maybe Maybe Baby is a collection of just over a dozen songs, each of which is so cute, fun and silly that you can practically see the two of them winking at each other after they sing their clever lyrics. The call and response between Sara Fitzsimmons and Dan Fishback in "Where the Fuck are They?" details Dan's distaste for all of Sara's male interests except for the gay ones. It's genuine comedy to hear what sounds like Joan Baez and Raffi singing about sucking cock, but even the best gimmicks can only get you so far.
Everything here is so fluffy and adorable that you'd be inclined to hate them if they weren't actually funny. For example, "I Like Cheese" -- the title doubles as a mission statement for the band's sense of humor -- deals with Sara's inability to go completely vegan because of her obsession with eating cheese. It's seconds away from collapsing under its own undergraduate cuteness when Sara says, "I would be so vegan you could feed me to other vegans, if it weren't for cheese..." Even so, the spectacle of nerds misbehaving is barely enough to keep the album afloat beneath the weight of the songs' self-aware charm. However, like getting a hug from a stranger, Cheese on Bread will make you feel good -- even if your first response is to blast some pepper spray in their eyes.
